StairBox is proud to have supported the latest DIY SOS transformation, helping to create a more accessible and comfortable home for eight-year-old Isla and her family in Leicester.
Isla lives with Mandibuloacral Dysplasia, a rare genetic condition that causes brittle bones and premature ageing. Despite the challenges she faces, Isla is full of positivity and determination a true inspiration to everyone involved.
More than 160 volunteers came together with the DIY SOS team to deliver this ambitious project. The transformation included major structural changes, such as extending the property to create more space, alongside thoughtful adaptations like lowering light switches and door handles to suit Isla’s needs.
StairBox contributed a bespoke staircase solution tailored to Isla’s mobility requirements, while ensuring full compliance with building regulations. Led by National Sales Manager Richard Gall, the team faced the challenge of designing a staircase that was safe, practical and stylish.
The breakthrough came from an unexpected source, Richard’s daughter, who suggested dual-height handrails. This innovative idea was brought to life by StairBox’s skilled team, who designed and machined a beautiful oak balustrade that complements the home’s new look and serves the whole family.
The impact has been life-changing. Thanks to the lower handrail, Isla can now walk up the stairs independently, a major step forward in her journey towards greater mobility and independent.
Reflecting on the experience, Richard Gall said: “Supporting this amazing cause and project has to be the highlight of my working career. Seeing trades and suppliers come together as they did was truly humbling, and it was an honour to be part of it. A massive thank you to everyone at StairBox and the wider business for helping change the life of a much-deserving family.”
This project stands as a testament to the power of collaboration, compassion and clever design, creating a home that not only meets Isla’s unique needs but also provides a beautiful space for her family to thrive.
