Woodie's, Ireland's leading DIY, Home & Garden retailer, officially opened its first store in Ennis, County Clare, on Saturday 21 June, creating 34 new jobs following a significant investment by the company.
The opening marks another significant milestone for Woodie's, with the Ennis store becoming its 36th store nationwide. Located in Ballymaley Business Park, the new Woodie’s store spans 21,000 sq. ft., including an 8,000 sq. ft. garden centre. The opening marks an important milestone for Woodie's, extending its nationwide network to 36 stores and strengthening its presence in the Mid-West region.
The development has transformed a retail warehouse that had remained vacant and unfinished for almost two decades into a modern retail destination serving homeowners, gardeners and DIY enthusiasts across Clare and the wider Mid-West region. The new store has created specialist horticultural positions alongside a mix of full-time and part-time retail roles, while bringing Woodie's home improvement, garden and DIY offering to customers across Clare for the first time.
The Ennis store showcases Woodie’s newly developed retail concept, designed in partnership with Irish design consultancy TAP and focused on inspiration, navigation and customer engagement. The shopper experience has been elevated with a renewed focus on what Woodie’s does best, including a redesigned dedicated customer helpdesk to provide expert advice and assistance at every stage of the shopping journey.
In-store navigation has also been thoughtfully re-imagined making it easier for customers to find what they need, while enhanced product displays help inspire ideas and showcase the breadth of the Woodie’s offering. The site also benefits from more than 100 customer parking spaces, supporting easy access for shoppers from across Clare and the Mid-West region.
A standout feature of the development is a dedicated outdoor garden centre, celebrating Woodie’s expertise in gardening by providing customers with an inspiring destination for expert advice, seasonal ideas and everything they need to bring their outdoor spaces to life.
The opening comes amid continued consumer investment in homes and gardens, with Woodie's reporting strong demand across categories including outdoor living, garden power equipment, lawn and garden care, paint and decorating, DIY products and home furnishings.
The store was officially opened by Woodie's CEO Damien Dwyer and the Mayor of Ennis, Cllr Mary Howard.
Speaking at the opening, Damien Dwyer, CEO of Woodie's, said: "The opening of our first store in Co. Clare is a significant milestone for Woodie's and reflects our continued investment in communities across Ireland. We had been looking for the right opportunity to establish a presence in Clare for some time and Ballymaley Business Park offered the scale, convenience and strategic location needed to serve customers across the county. For many years, customers from Clare have travelled to our stores in neighbouring counties, so we're delighted to now bring the Woodie's experience directly to them. This investment is about much more than opening a new store. It is about creating employment, regenerating a long-vacant site and making it easier for customers in Clare to access the products, expertise and services they need closer to home."
Mayor of Ennis, Cllr Mary Howard, welcomed the investment, saying: "This is a really positive investment for Ennis. Woodie's arrival brings new jobs, new energy and a strong commitment to community. It's great to see a business not only investing in the town but also bringing a long-vacant site back into use and creating new opportunities for the local economy."
As part of its commitment to Clare, Woodie's will next month unveil plans to support local sports clubs and community organisations through its Woodie’s Community Fund initiative, extending the retailer's long-standing investment in local communities beyond its store network.
